About the project

PST Group is implementing one of Lithuania’s most strategic and technologically complex projects – the construction of a repository for low- and intermediate-level short-lived radioactive waste in the Visaginas Municipality. This €156 million project will ensure the safe storage of radioactive waste for at least 300 years, in compliance with the highest international nuclear safety standards.

The repository is being built on a 45-hectare site in Stabatiškė, adjacent to other Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (INPP) radioactive waste management facilities. The complex will consist of three groups of reinforced concrete vaults designed to hold up to 100,000 cubic meters of final waste packages—reinforced concrete containers filled and sealed with radioactive waste. In addition to the main storage modules (vaults), the project includes a comprehensive infrastructure complex: a technological building for container reception and processing, an administrative building, surface water collection basins and treatment systems, a physical security perimeter with control posts, a meteorological station for monitoring, and other auxiliary facilities.

The project will be implemented over a 4.5-year period starting in 2024. Radioactive waste will be deposited in the repository throughout the entire decommissioning period of the INPP, with waste accumulation planned until 2038. After the repository’s closure, a long-term monitoring phase will begin: for the first 100 years, active supervision will be carried out—ensuring physical security, technical maintenance, and environmental monitoring—followed by 200 years of passive supervision.

“Throughout our company’s history, we have completed many large-scale and technologically challenging projects—from an Olympic-standard swimming pool to cogeneration plants. The construction of the INPP repository will undoubtedly stand among these as one of the most responsible and nationally significant projects. We thank our client for their trust and for the opportunity to contribute to creating history,”
says Tomas Stukas, CEO of PST Group.

Upon completion, Lithuania will have a modern radioactive waste storage facility, developed according to global best practices and meeting the highest engineering and safety standards. PST Group’s experience in delivering sustainable, large-scale, and technically advanced projects ensures the successful implementation of this nationally important project.
